Ford Shelby Cobra Concept Car
Taking many styling cues from the original 1966 Shelby Cobra, the new Shelby Cobra Concept Car offers up an evocative and performance oriented design.
Unlike most concept cars, the Shelby Cobra Concept is a very feasible design which is almost ready to run on the production line.
As with the introduction of the Ford GT40 in 2002, the Shelby Cobra draws on Ford’s emotional and performance roots in a thoroughly modern interpretation that reinforces the company’s product-led momentum.
Ford says:
“Our lineup of new 2005 cars is all about momentum,” said Jim Padilla, executive vice president and president of the Americas, Ford Motor Company. “But the Ford Shelby Cobra concept is all about speed.”
Looking at the photos you can see Ford has created this Concept car with minimalist interior and exterior design features, with the main emphasis being place on performance.
An enormous grille in the nose, side vents, low-back seats and flared wheel arches all do well to establish a connection with Carroll Shelby’s original 1960’s Cobras. The Shelby Cobra Concept may share similar design features with its older brother but apart from the cosmetics, the proportions and dimensions of the Shelby Cobra Concept are completely different.
The release of the Ford GT Concept car and then the actual production of the Ford GT helped the team at ford enormously to get the design complete (such as the space frame and suspension).
The Shelby Cobra of old was powered by a massive 427c.u. V8, the new Shelby Cobra Concept will be powered by an aluminium block V10 (6.4Litre). The V10 is said to develop ~605 horsepower and 501nm of torque whilst still being naturally aspirated.
Unlike many concept cars, the Shelby Cobra Concept can be put to the test and under testing the performance results were extremely impressive to say the least. Racing from stand stilll to 60mph in UNDER 4 seconds! Top speed is limited to 100mph - don’t worry this is only for the concept car.
Ford Says:
“I’m sure the question on everyone’s mind at this point is, ‘Are you going to build a production version?’ The answer is, ‘We’ll see.’ If we get the same overwhelming reaction to the Cobra concept as we did to the GT concept, anything is possible,” said J Mays, group vice president, Design.
This production-feasible roadster has a 427-inspired 605-horsepower, all-aluminum V-10 engine mounted at the front of an advanced aluminum chassis modified from the rear-engine Ford GT.
To put things in perspective, the Shelby Cobra Concept weighs ~ 3000lbs (~1.3T) is as long as a Mazda Mx-5 with 605hp!
Quote from Shelby re original Cobra
“Our original objective was to build a sports car that would outrun Corvette,” Shelby said. “I never dreamed it would become the icon that it did.”
